Employment

STEVENS.COM, Inc.

Senior Systems Consultant 03/01 - I have provided systems administration and application administration assistance to several clients:

  • For Senware, Inc. - I have provided systems administration assistance for Solaris, Linux, and Windows systems, including building new servers, day-to-day administration of servers, and troubleshooting of server-related problems. I have also provided Oracle DBA assistance, including building Oracle 8i and 9i databases, day-to-day support of databases, tuning of databases, backup of databases via cold-backup scripts and RMAN, and troubleshooting of application interaction with Oracle.
  • For Houston Energy, LP - I upgraded over 400 GeoQuest IESX 9 seismic projects to GeoFrame 3.8/IESX 11 in about two months. I assisted in the administration of the Oracle backend for GeoFrame 3.8 and also provided suggestions and an initial implementation strategy for backing up over 1TB of data.
  • For Active.com, Inc. - I moved the production systems environment from a colocation facility in Colorado to a colocation facility in California. This entailed moving the production Oracle database, production application servers, and production web servers and all other miscellaneous servers and equipment while keeping the Active.com website as available as possible.

Active.com, Inc. / LeagueLink, Inc.

Lead Systems Engineer 08/99 - 02/01 Active.com, Inc. was the result of a merger between ActiveUSA.com and Leaguelink, Inc. Having worked with Leaguelink from its beginning (I was the 6th employee), I was responsible for systems administration, end-user support, MySQL database administration, Oracle database administration, and Perl development and debugging. My primary responsibility at Active was to build and maintain the production equipment environment, which included Sun E220's, Sun E420's, a Sun E4500, a MetaStor storage array, multiple Linux systems, multiple Windows NT systems, and Cisco and Extreme networking equipment. In addition to the production equipment, I built and maintainted the development systems, including several Sun E220's and Sun E420's and multiple Linux systems. I performed all MySQL DBA duties while the product had a MySQL backend and I debugged the entire application during our first port to an Oracle backend. Once the application was ported to Oracle, I assisted in the administration of the Oracle database. I also implemented and maintained the office network infrastructure, including WAN connections, routing, and switching, and grew the network from a single 24 port switch and one dial-out connection to an Extreme Networks Alpine 3808 switch with 128 ports and three T-1 WAN connections.

Sun Microsystems, Inc.

IR System Technologist - Enterprise Network Services 03/99 - 08/99 I assisted in the deployment of Sun's Enterprise SyMON Manager, a remote monitoring and problem resolving tool. The purpose of this project was to ease the load on systems administrators as well as to centralize the management of many geographically diverse servers.

Web Services Engineer - Enterprise Network Serverices 1/98 - 3/99 I was primarily responsible for the daily operations of Sun's internal web proxy servers. This maintenance included keeping all software up to date, analyzing and archiving log files, and configuring servers for maximum performance. I also performed an analysis and benchmark of several web proxy solutions.

Project Engineer 2 - Sun Professional Serverices 5/97 - 11/97 I was a general systems administration consultant with a specialty in managing Sun's Enterprise 10000 servers. The E10000 was Sun's first server that supported dynamic system domains, dynamic reconfiguration, and alternate pathing. I assisted in the installation of several E10000 servers and consulted with several customers on system performance issues.

Hughes Information Technology Company

Member of Technical Staff Associate 5/96 - 4/97 I was a systems administrator responsible for supporting C developers. I was heavily involved in migrating the development environment from DEC to SUN equipment.

Amoco Production Company

UNIX Systems Analyst 3/95 - 5/96 As an intern at Amoco, I ("The Lowly College Intern") was involved in the daily administration and support of the UNIX systems which were used primarily for geophysical exploration. My work involved assembling and installing hardware (single cards, desktop workstations, server systems, plotters, etc.), setting up user accounts, and watching for disk failures and network glitches. I was also heavily involved in end user support, which was our team's first priority. This included my helping start Amoco's Denver UNIX help desk by running it for the first few months. I also became responsible for Amoco's Denver (internal) WWW server which was an UltraSparc 170.

Motorola, Inc.

Summer Intern 6/93 - 8/93 and 6/94 - 8/94 I worked as a summer intern at Motorola for two summers doing patent research and archiving. I worked with a patent attorney who was interested in building an archive of patents that Motorola might be able to use in prosecuting others and protecting themselves against patent infringement lawsuits. The archive was already started, so I researched and acquired advantageous patents and documents to update and expand a patent related computer database. During my second summer I also contributed to some C programs for compression software.

Personal Interests

When I'm not at work I like to go rock and ice climbing. One of these days, I hope to learn to fly some of the radio control model airplanes that I have. Amateur radio (Extra Class License AB5IC) is yet another of my hobbies for which I don't have enough time.
