J.
David Stevens
Summary
|
Expert in the application of computer technology
to oil and gas exploration. Established a corporation whose
employees manage networks of UNIX workstations for several
clients. Clients networks range in size from a single
workstation to 20 workstations. Assisted a client company
to grow from a network with one deskside single CPU server
to a network that includes a server with 32 CPUs and two
terabytes of disk storage. Enlarged the exploration workstation
network for a $1.5 billion oil and gas company from two
workstations to 17 workstations. Has managed all parts of
a network from hardware specification through end user application
and data support. Enhanced user productivity while managing
the technical workstation network for a $500 million oil
and gas company with over 150 leases in the Gulf of Mexico.

1997Present STEVENS.COM, Inc. Houston, TX
President
Established a new corporation that serves
more the 10 client companies. Installed and managed workstations
and servers using Solaris and IRIX operating system. Installed
and managed applications including GeoQuest Systems GeoFrame
and IESX, Landmark Graphics OpenWorks, Oracle Server and
Application Server, Energy Graphics Intellex 4.0, Larson
Software Technology plotting solutions, Zeh Graphics plotting
solutions, and Legato NetWorker. Upgraded a client's server
from a Sun Sparc 10 with 90 GB of storage to a Sun Enterprise
3000 server with 240 GB of storage. Assisted in the installation
of a 32 CPU Silicon Graphics server with 16 GB of memory
and two terabytes of disk storage. Implemented alert systems
that monitor machines, processes, and disk status. The systems
can send email or electronic page alerts to system administrators
in case of problems. Installed ISDN routers to allow clients
to work on systems from remote location. Established a WAN
that provides intranet and internet connectivity for five
sites.

1994-1997
Seagull Energy Corporation Houston, TX
Geophysical Systems Manager
Responsible for all installation, user
support, operations and maintenance of a local area network
comprising 15 UNIX workstations, three servers, and one
large plotter. Personally loaded 2d and 3d seismic volumes
for almost 100 interpretation projects over a period of
three years. Made available to explorationists using workstations
almost all of the seismic data in the company database for
the Gulf of Mexico. Began a migration from manual drafting
to computerized drafting using customized enhancements to
the Autocad drafting package. Implemented automated backup
systems that aided in the recovery of files and projects
in case of accident or failure. Implemented internet mail
and file transfers in ways that protected the security of
the internal network and did so at minimal cost. Made effective
use of old equipment while adding state of the art new equipment
in order to maximize use of assets.

1991-1993 Nerco Oil & Gas, Inc. Houston, TX
Manager Geophysical Systems
Responsible for all user support, operations
and maintenance of a $1.5 million local area network comprising
12 UNIX workstations, three servers, and three large plotters.
Also served as teacher and consultant for special problems
involving modeling, interpretation, data, and presentation
of seismic and geologic data. Improved completion time for
many projects by 50% to 90% by implementing current technology
and helping the technical and drafting staff to use it.
Implemented a CD-ROM database on a network that will pay
out in less than two years, save time for the user, and
cause the data to be much more useful because of its availability.
Directed the customization and training of computerized
drafting. As a result, in less than three months four drafters
produced almost all the graphic presentations for a data
room for the sale of the entire company. Implemented a system
to alert key personnel in case an unattended plotter needed
attention, cutting lost time due to stopped equipment. Enhanced
computer system reliability by analyzing, isolating, identifying,
and repairing any problems that caused the computer system
to fail under normal operating circumstances.

1982- 1991 Union Texas Petroleum Corporation, Houston,
TX
Associate Geophysicist
Interpreted seismic data and integrated
results with geologic interpretations. Tested and taught
the use of new computerized exploration tools. Planned and
supervised acquisition of seismic data.
Completed a project at a cost of four man-weeks
instead of the 36 man-weeks predicted by the group supervisor.
The improvement was the result of knowledge of available
technology and data sources.
Successfully planned and guided an innovative
data collection operation in the Cook Inlet of Alaska. The
$750,000 project was completed on schedule, within budget,
and yielded high quality data.
Division Geophysicist, Southern Division
Responsible for geophysical activities
in the Texas Gulf Coast Area and all of the Gulf of Mexico.
Supervised six geophysicists and a support staff of three.
Supervised and directly participated in technical work leading
to the purchase of two leases that have yielded over 200
BCF of net production for the company and still have additional
potential. Evaluated performance and reduced staff by 10%
with no loss in productivity.
